Transitioning to a wireless workflow – a conversation with Leigh Woolford

High-volume photography in early-learning settings is often a race against the clock – especially when you’re working with preschoolers who don’t exactly follow a script. In our latest sit-down, Glen Nelson chats with Leigh Woolford from Blue Wolf Photography about stepping away from the traditional “shoot to card” method and moving toward a fully wireless, tethered setup.

If you’ve ever felt the stress of matching hundreds of candid photos to the right child at the end of a long day, this one’s for you.

The challenge: Beyond the studio

Leigh’s team specialises in a “natural play” style. Instead of the standard seated portrait, they follow children through playgrounds and classrooms to capture authentic moments. While parents love the results, the logistics can be a nightmare for photographers – identifying children in a crowded playground and keeping every shot in focus is no small feat. It also means working with unpredictable lighting while carefully managing data to ensure every required shot is captured without overshooting.

The solution: Going wireless

To address these challenges, Leigh’s team uses an integrated wireless transmitter, allowing them to move freely while images are sent instantly to a nearby laptop. Their “tethered but mobile” setup – using tools like CamRanger or built-in wireless functionality – creates a real-time link between camera and workstation, giving photographers the freedom to move with the action while maintaining immediate visibility and control over every shot. This allows them to:

  • verify quality – view images on a larger screen in real time to check focus and expression

  • automate data entry – use systems like Photolink to attach metadata and notes to a child’s profile as they are being photographed

  • reduce post-production workload – by reviewing images live, photographers can cut down from 60+ “maybes” to around 20 high-quality frames per child.

Key takeaways

Leigh’s approach is simple: don’t be afraid to try new things. He’s refreshingly honest about the transition – it takes some trial and error to get the system set up properly, but once it’s running smoothly, there’s no going back. He also explains how this shift has changed his day-to-day operations:

  • More kids, less stress: Since moving to this workflow, they can comfortably photograph around 30 per cent more children in a day without feeling rushed or losing that personal touch.

  • Increased sales: Higher-quality, more intentional shots lead to improved parent satisfaction and higher conversion rates.

  • Seamless customer service: By tagging notes (e.g. “red shirt” or “scratch on chin”) directly into the CRM during the shoot, the office team is better prepared to respond to parent enquiries later.

For Leigh, the real value of technology isn’t in adding complexity, but in removing it. By moving to a wireless workflow, Blue Wolf Photography has reduced admin pressure, spent less time managing data, and freed up more time to focus on what matters most – capturing great photos.
